A wild thought

Why don't marriages have expiration dates?
Let's say, if you marry someone for the first time, you are given 2 years after which you have a month or two to reconfirm your marriage for the next 5 years (and then 10, and then 25, and then forever) or it will be automatically 'expired' setting the parties free?
